Decoupage Crafts for Kids

Create Denim & Fabric Scrap Pots: A DIY Recycling Project

As I don’t do much sewing, the colorful fat quarters available in WalMart’s craft department are ideal for my smaller sewing projects. When I end up with small bits of scrap fabric that don’t belong in that pile anymore, I like incorporating those scraps into something else; since I also have quite a bit of denim lying around I decided to create small flower pots out of these scrap pieces!

These pots probably wouldn’t fair well outdoors due to their decoupage design, but would make great containers for small indoor plants like succulents!

Patio Paint is my go-to paint for painting on terra cotta surfaces, so this project originally made its debut for Hobby Lobby via DecoArt.

First I painted my pots using Amazon’s [amazon_link id=”B000XZY4FO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=””]Larkspur Blue Patio Paint[/amazon_link]. While they dried I cut fabric scraps into 1-inch squares.

I cut two strips of denim to fit around the brims and frayed their edges by pulling at threads along their edge.

Once the pot was covered with glue, I applied a coat of DecoArt’s decoupage medium (though you could also use Mod Podge), pressing fabric squares onto it as I went along.

Decoupage medium was then applied over the fabric scraps for added depth and dimension.

Once everything was dry, I adhered denim strips around the brims and let everything set up.
